In 1987 my husband and I met a lady who had “recovered” from a severe stoke. Quite how we came to ask this question during our conversation has now passed into the furthest reaches of my memory. The question we asked was, “would she like to join a club that was dedicated to those who had recovered form a stoke to enable friendships to form with those who shared a common life experience”. Her enthusiasm was so positive that at that point in time Abergele Stoke Club effectively was born. A few local people helped to form a Management Committee and in 1998 we received Charitable Status (1072840).
The Club initially met fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Pensarn and now at Canolfan Dewi Sant. Mobility issues for members attending the meetings was an ongoing concern for us and in the early 1990’s our first adapted minibus was purchased. Our latest “bus” (the third) is now 14 years old and with help from Abergele Town Council with its running costs is still going strong.
The Club is run by its members for the benefit of its members and always welcomes those who have recovered from a stroke. If you, dear reader are a stroke survivor of know of someone who is please do feel free to contact myself or our Secretary, Sharon Malkin for more information.
